The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland that is butterfly-shaped. It is located in the lower part on the front side of the neck just below the voice box. It consists of two lobes that lie on either side of the windpipe.
The thyroid gland produces a hormone that helps in the regulation of metabolism, that is the way your body uses energy. The thyroid gland uses iodine from the foods you eat to make two main hormones, T3 and T4.
Thyroid surgery is also known as a thyroidectomy. It is a type of surgical procedure used to remove all or part of the thyroid gland. When one of the two lobes of the thyroid gland is removed then it is called a lobectomy.
